Russ's
Painting, "The Raven" 1998
Acrylic paint on stretched canvas.
My life started anew the day I met my husband. All
things that came before were but a training course, a
proving ground for the now. I dreamed of him for years.
I searched, I yearned, and when the time was right... he
found me. The first time I was at his house, he told me
that The Raven was his power animal. I went home and
started to sketch. It took a while for me to finish, so
nervous I was to dissapoint him, or myself. I had never
painted a bird before. He looks out at the viewer with a
critical, knowing eye. He carries the god/sun upon his
wing, his trusty compass within his claws. He knows the
direction he is going. The sky is darker on the left,
denoting a stormy past. Orange with plenty of movement
on the right, firey, colorful, his male energy creating
turmoil, yet shining ever bright. I love him.

"Tri-Eye"
1996
Oil paint on stretched canvas.
I always dreamed of going to Egypt. Pyramids spoke to me.
So too the symbol of the eye. I wondered what I could
'see' if I were to view the pyramids for myself. After
painting this, I was able to manifest a trip to the land I
had always dreamed of. I immediately felt at home upon
landing in Cairo, even more so upon arriving in Luxor. I
met many an Egyptian artist, and contributed images
(including this one) to a book that was sent back to all
my new Egyptian friends.

"Squish"
1996
Oil paint on stretched canvas.
I spent years as a biker. I wore boots, road worn and
comfortable. I wore leather gloves, and felt protected. My
jeans were stained with grease and oil. My leather vest
was a daily article, comforting, familiar. My nose was
pierced. My hair long and flowing. My path of independance
took me to the 'straight' world of work. I suddenly felt
restrained, stifled. The me I had been so comfortable
with, the one I wore like a sheild, was being stripped
from me, a piece at a time. The vise was tightening. |

The
Artist's Way Class, "My Life" Collage 1994
Acrylic paint, newsprint, magazine pictures, cloth,
tarot card, tools, paint brushes, feathers, old artwork
of mine, etc. on stretched canvas.
I hadn't painted in ten years. I was desparate,
depressed, in need of the release that only my paintings
can give. I stumbled serendipitously upon a class based
on the Julie Cameron book, the Artist's Way. It promised
to unblock the blocked artist. I signed up immediately.
Towards the end of the class, we were required to create
a collage of our life, birth to future. The acrylic
paint on the canvas background was the first thing I had
painted in all those years. All other images you see
here, spring forth from this one cathartic work.
